The Jalon Valley (also called Vall de Pop) is about 30 minutes drive
inland from the coastal towns of Denia, Javea and Moraira. The area
attracts those seeking the traditional Spanish rural way of life - you
will discover towns and villages nestling in these pretty valleys and
rugged mountains that have changed little in centuries. The best time
visit this beautiful area is late January and early February, when the
whole valley is carpeted with pink and white almond blossom.
Jalon, in the heart of the Jalon Valley, is the capital and a
lively town with an interesting selection of craft shops, bodegas (wine
cellars), restaurants and shops offering a wide range of services and
local products.
In the old square is a fountain, around which an open market is held
every Tuesday morning. From the square you can see the famous Jalon
church with its stunning blue dome. Every Saturday a large flea
market is held adjacent to the river, specializing in antique furniture
and collectables. Jalon is very well known for its local wines, which
you can sample in the bodegas.
Jalon was under Arabic domination for over five hundred years. During this period, they built two fortresses to prevent attacks from the Solana and Bernia mountain ranges on the numerous settlers in the valley. They also created the typical local house style, for which Jalon is famous today - houses of stone and old bricks with large wooden doors and decorated walls. In 1472 the Moors sent a selection of Jalon's wines to the Valencian Court and sold raisins to merchants in Javea, a trade which later became the basis of Marina Alta's economy.
Life in Jalon continued to be
heavily influenced by Arabic culture until they were forced out by the
Christians in 1609. The trade in raisins grew to become the major
economic activity, and over the next 300 years many
farmers from Majorca moved here to cultivate the land, growing grapes and
raisins.
The area has some of the best scenery in the whole country.
Magnificent mountains surround the plains of olive trees, orange groves,
vineyards and almonds, and peppered throughout the valley are
unspoilt villages including Alcalali, Lliber and Parcent. This is a
walker's paradise, with walks ranging from a gentle stroll to a six hour
trek around the Sierra Bernia mountains.
