Javea nestles between the capes of San Antonio and La Nao. Cabo de Nao separates the bays of Valencia and Alicante and is the most easterly point of the Valencian coastline.

Frequent attacks from marauding pirates forced the inhabitants of Javea to build a walled town about 2 km from the coast - walls which remained standing until the late 19th century. The walls enclosed an area around the 15th century fortified Gothic Church of San Bartolomé which still dominates the old town, and is surrounded by white-washed houses with iron grilles and Tosca stone lintels. Alongside the church is the beautiful indoor market where you can buy local fresh produce daily. The town hall, cultural centre, Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and the Chapel of Santa Ana are all within easy walking distance of the historic centre.

In the port is the unusual Church of Our Lady of Loreta, built in the shape of a ship's keel. Here there are many excellent and interesting shops, bars and cafes. The area is bustling with activity and has a real Spanish feel.

Javea's rugged coastline, extending 20 km coastline from the Cova Tallá to the Cala de la Granadella, is indented with secluded coves and sandy beaches, once used by pirates and smugglers.  The soft and sandy Arenal beach is ideal for families, the small shingled, Granadella beach bordered by pine trees is a diver's paradise, whilst the Ambolo beaches are popular with naturists.

The Arenal also has a wide range of good quality shops, excellent restaurants and bars, many with live music, and a superb nightlife in the summer.

Javea is surrounded by beautiful green hills set with select and exclusive villas. The area is cosmopolitan and a perfect location for holidays or to make your permanent home.

The town has a long and fascinating history. In the 13th century, King Jamie claimed Javea back from the Moors, and in the next century, another fortress was built and the town’s walls reinforced. Later, the town experienced an economic recovery and a population expansion, which drew the attention of the Barbarians and so more fortresses and churches were built, including the church Eglesia de San Bartolome.

During the early 16th century, the plague consumed the town and a hospital was built - the remains can be seen at the Capella de Santa Anna. In the 18th century Javea supported the Bourbons in the war of succession war and won several privileges including permission to build the harbour from which it could export fruit to other countries. Trade began with raisins, wheat, grapes, bread and olives until in the latter half of the 19th century raisins became the major export.
