Moraira lies in a bay between the larger resorts of Javea and Calpe in a beautiful mountainous part of Spain’s Costa Blanca, and is conveniently positioned about mid-way between the airports of Alicante and Valencia.

The area has a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with beautiful, unspoiled scenery and many small villages to explore. Moraira has grown from a small fishing village over 30 years ago to an attractive, charming holiday and retirement resort attracting visitors from the world over.

What were once storage huts used by local fisherman have now been converted into picturesque houses and shops. Many inhabitants of nearby Teulada moved down to Moraira to catch fish, and today the fishermen still go to sea in the early hours of the morning, and auction their catch later in the day at the traditional fish market – one of the oldest and most important in Spain.

The marina is impressive, there is an excellent variety of local shops and many restaurants and bars that retain their Spanish character. Moraira’s weekly market is well worth visiting, selling excellent quality fresh fruit and vegetables, local specialities including herbs and spices, leather goods, clothes, rugs, fresh and silk flowers, souvenirs, pottery, etc.

Moraira has several excellent family beaches which have been awarded the EEC Blue Flag for cleanliness, including the famous Ampolla beach. Close to this wonderful sandy and safe beach is the 12th century tower – the Castilla de Moraira, which was used to defend the town from sea-borne attacks. To the north of the harbour and marina is the village of El Portet from where several excellent walks lead to the hills above, giving fabulous views of the town and coast.

Local facilities include three excellent golf courses, tennis, football, squash, water sports, boat hire and trips, horse-riding, go-kart racing tracks for both adults and children and a small fairground. There are many outstanding international restaurants too suit all tastes and budgets.

Moraira has an excellent Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and is protected by the surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees.

In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate as one of the most equitable in the world - neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year round destination.

The local residents are extremely friendly and patient with foreign visitors to the area. And with a large northern European community, there is a pleasant international feel to the area. Most people are pleased to speak English with you and even more pleased if you make an attempt to speak some Spanish!
